SQ-SR - STARQUAD MICROPHONE CABLE Polyethylene jacketed - outdoor environments and sheep resistant
For some years, Canford has manufactured a 'sheep resistant' video cable, SDV-L-SR, developed for specialist applications such as RSPB nest security monitoring and BBC's Springwatch, where video cables are laid in the autumn up to 'nest-cams', and other remote locations. Based on this experience, a version of the standard Starquad mic cable has now been developed for similar applications. Whilst nibbling by sheep is less likely to affect the performance (unless they have a taste for copper), the outdoor-use environmental properties of the polyethylene jacket - resistance to UV degradation, better moisture resistance, and better resistance to physical damage - are the key features in this design.
A much more common problem concerns cables laid in underground ducts between buildings, or flown on overhead gantries outdoors. Ducts may become waterlogged at times, and also suffer from occasional oil contamination. Whilst this cable is not suitable for continuous immersion in water or oils, it provides a better level of protection than those with normal PVC or PUR jackets.
Designed for the transmission of sound through noisy areas the balanced quad cable is used as a twisted pair with capacitance unbalance characteristics designed to cancel out the worst kind of interference - external noise. To achieve this, four insulated conductors are twisted together with a very short lay-length, the insulation thickness on each conductor being closely controlled to match capacitance as closely as possible.
