TASCAM PORTABLE CD AND SD RECORDER - BB-1000CD

This versatile, portable and self-contained two-channel recorder and player, designed for use in education and business or by musicians, uses four integral microphones and two external microphone or line-level sources to record to CD or SD memory card. With an in-built metronome and tuner as well as overdub, looping and variable-speed playback functions, the BB-1000CD is suitable for a wide range of applications including music rehearsal and practice.

This records directly onto blank CD-R or CD-RW discs in standard CD-DA format, or onto SD or SDHC memory cards as .wav or .mp3 audio files. Recording level can be set with or without automatic gain-control and external audio sources may be mixed with the integral microphones. The unit has a range of special playback features making it very suitable for musical and educational use; these include loop-playback, tempo change at constant pitch, pitch change, a marker/locator system, a metronome and chromatic tuner and an overdub function. A 'Part Cancel' facility reduces the level of vocals or backing on tracks as an aid to music practice. An automatic record-start function can be programmed to start and stop recording according to input signal-level, making the BB-1000CD useful for recording meetings, conferences and seminars. The recorder will burn CD-DA discs with .mp3 files directly sourced from an SD card, or rip CD-DA tracks to .wav or .mp3 files on an SD card. Headphones or the internal 5W loudspeakers may be used for monitoring and play back.

Most operating controls are located on the upper face; a centrally-mounted multi-purpose LCD shows track time, left and right audio level and other information, depending on the unit’s various operating modes. Associated with the display are a large data-entry wheel with 'enter' function and a cursor key-wheel, 'home' and 'menu' buttons and two multi-function soft-keys. Input controls are two rotary controls for recording-level which allow mixing of the front and rear microphone pairs with external inputs in various combinations as configured in the menu system, with two red peak-level LEDs. Dedicated 'input' and 'balance buttons' access the corresponding menu pages on the display directly. Playback controls consist of a level control for headphones or internal loudspeakers, a 'loop' button enabling the loop-playback function with the associated 'in' and 'out' buttons for marking the loop start and end points and 'speed', 'key' and 'fine pitch' rotary controls for varying playback tempo and pitch. Transport control is by the conventional set of play/pause, stop, fast forward, fast rewind and record/ready buttons, with fast forward and fast rewind doubling as 'next' and 'previous' track. A 'flash back' button replays the last few seconds, adjustable from one to five seconds, of a recording. Dedicated buttons are provided for CD eject, 'overdub', 'tuner', 'mark' and 'metronome'. Recording media selection is made with individual CD and SD buttons, with LED indication.

All connections are made on the left side-panel. There are two balanced, XLR inputs for left and right external microphones, RCA(phone) sockets for unbalanced left and right line-in and line out and a headphone output on a 3.5mm, 3-pole jack socket. There is also a coaxial connector for external 12V DC power. Toggle switches for power on/off, phantom power on/off, internal speaker on/off and automatic gain/limiter on/off are also provided. The side panel also incorporates a Kensington security slot.

The CD drive and SD card slot are located on the right-hand side of the unit. A pair of omni-directional microphones are flush-fitted into both front and rear panels. The rear panel also provides a carrying handle and access to the battery compartment. The front panel has a multi-function LED bargraph meter, indicating metronome and tuner features as well as record and playback levels, and a power LED (red).
