Sonifex Redboxes were introduced in 1999 and were designed for systems integrators. They are very well received in both Broadcast and studio industries. The series of signal processors that include headphone amplifiers, mix-minus generators, silence detectors, tone generators, distribution amplifiers, audio converters and more, are built in two different extrusions, with front and rear panels screwed to the extrusion.

ACOUSTIC ECHO CANCELLERS

RB-AEC - Acoustic Echo Canceller

RB-AEC is primarily designed for the benefit of studio personnel in television and radio. When a studio presenter's microphone signal is played out through a monitor speaker in the control room, it can be picked up by the control room microphone(s) and returned to the presenter's earpiece as an undesirable echo. This unit 'learns' the environment and can be used to remove the echo from the earpiece, using digital processing.

In circumstances where green-screen video processing is taking place, the delay can be greater than 200ms. Additionally, the dimensions, occupancy and distance between mouth and microphone can further influence the echo. The RB-AEC is used to remove the entire output of the control-room monitor-speaker from the presenter's feed, by adapting to the environment in which the control-room microphones are placed. Although acoustic echo cancellation is more commonly implemented in telephony systems, the Sonifex RB-AEC is designed to produce broadcast quality cancellation.

The post-processed transmission output program from the studio (A) is sent to the RB-AEC as an analogue or digital audio signal (the stereo input is auto-sensing) which 'acts as a mix-minus to the input signal (B) from the control room'. The RB-AEC removes the unwanted acoustic echoes so that the audio sent to the presenter's earpiece (C) is free of echoes and reflection artefacts.

The device may also be used during a 'phone-in' to remove delayed caller audio from the telephone line.

The unit can be controlled remotely over an Ethernet connection using the built-in web server. By default the unit is configured for dynamic addressing using DHCP and 'Auto-IP'. If a static IP address is required then this must be configured through the web server.

The device is packaged in the familiar Sonifex Redbox rack-mounting chassis, IU high. The front panel has an LED to indicate power.

The rear panel has two 3-pin, female, XLR connectors for the line level analogue or digital inputs for the 'far end' and 'near end'. Three 3-pin, male, XLR connectors provide analogue outputs one and two as well as the digital output. A bank of four miniature (DIL) switches adjust settings, a 9-pin, female, D-sub connector provides GPIO connections and an RJ45 connector is provided for Ethernet. Power is connected via an IEC inlet, with an adjacent fuse.

RB-ADDA - A/D & D/A Converter, Basic Model, Preset Controls

Intended for use in professional applications the Sonifex RB-ADDA is a bi-directional A/D and D/A converter that converts, simultaneously, a stereo analogue signal to the digital domain and a digital signal to a stereo analogue output. There are comprehensive options for selecting clock-rates, synchronisation and format, whilst the analogue ports have facilities for level-matching. This unit has only a power indicator on the front panels. All adjustments are pre-set on the rear.

Four synchronisation modes: 'Master' uses an internal reference with switchable sample rates of 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 64kHz, 88.2kHz or 96kHz. 'Slave' locks to the selected digital input. 'Auto' is similar but reverts to the set internal reference in the absence of a digital synchronising input. 'Auto-lock' locks to the incoming sample-rate but in the absence of a synchronisation input, adopts the matching internal reference rate. The power LED flashes whenever the unit is not synchronised to the incoming digital signal. Switches provide for consumer/professional status-bit selection, emphasis and for the output word-length to be selected as 16, 20 or 24 bits with dithering applied as appropriate.

Connections: The rear panel has two 3-pin female XLR electronically balanced inputs and two RCA (phono) sockets for unbalanced analogue audio inputs. Level trim controls, +/-3dB, are accessible by screwdriver. The RCA (phono) inputs have a further 10dB gain incorporated. Two 3-pin male XLR connectors provide electronically balanced outputs and two RCA (phono) sockets act as unbalanced analogue outputs. Digital inputs are a 3-pin female XLR for AES/EBU, and an RCA (phono) socket for S/PDIF. A 3-pin male XLR is used for the AES/EBU output and an RCA (phono) for S/PDIF. Power is supplied through an IEC inlet, with associated fuse holder and voltage selector switch.

Controls: A push switch selects either XLR or RCA (phono) inputs. Similar switches choose either AES/EBU or SPDIF connectors for the digital inputs and outputs. Miniature switches allow 0dBFS to be produced from +12dBu, +18dBu or +24dBu inputs nominal in conjunction with +/-3dB (screwdriver) trim. Analogue outputs are switchable to the same reference levels as the A/D section. A further bank of miniature switches select status, and a screwdriver operated rotary switch selects frequencies and synchronisation modes.

Analogue audio input: +27/+17dBu maximum, 20/10kohms, balanced/unbalanced. Dynamic range: 110dB. Distortion: better than 96dB THD + N, 1kHz, ref +8dBu. Analogue audio output: +24/+14dBu maximum, 50/75 ohms, balanced/unbalanced. Dynamic range: 100dB. Power source: 110-120V or 220-240V AC, 6W maximum. Dimensions (WxDxH): 480 x 108 x 42mm. Weight: 1.6kg.

Included accessories: Handbook, AC power cordset with plug.
Optional accessories: RB-RK3 rear panel rack kit, RB-FR1 front-panel kit

RB-ADDA2 - A/D & D/A Converter, Enhanced Model, Front Panel Controls, 192kHz

This advanced design is based on the RB-ADDA, offering additional features, the most obvious of which is the array of controls on the front panel, with push-buttons for all the main settings.

It supports higher sample frequency rates up to and including 176.4kHz and 192kHz, has additional independent AES/EBU and Word Clock synchronising inputs, so that the A/D and D/A sections can operate independently, with the digital outputs synchronised to an external master reference clock. A serial RS232 port is included so that the RB-ADDA2 settings can be controlled remotely. The front panel LED indicators alter automatically when using RS232 commands. In both A/D and D/A sections, audio is sent to all of the outputs simultaneously.

Connections: All the features described under 'connections' for the RB-ADDA are present. In addition TOSLink sockets are provided for digital input and output. An additional 3-pin female XLR is available for an AES/EBU synchronisation input, together with a BNC connector for word-clock. A 9-pin male D-sub connector provides an RS232 port.

Controls: The buttons are arranged in sets on the front panel, where pressing the button advances the current selection and LED indicator. The 'A/D Source' push-button is used to select from either the balanced or unbalanced stereo analogue inputs and this push-button also defines the input level for full scale digits at one of +12dBFS, +18dBFS or +24dBFS. These values can then be fine-tuned by using the pre-set potentiometers on the rear. For the digital output, there are three push-button switches to select the sample frequency, bit-depth and status bit modes. The 'Frequency' button allows selection of the master sample frequency from one of 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz or 192kHz. The 'Bits' button sets the output bit-depth as one of 16, 20 or 24 bits, and the 'CS Data' button defines the content of the channel status bits embedded within the digital audio stream. The status bits can be forced to either professional or consumer mode or to follow the mode of the input.

The 'Sync' button is used to select the input, from Word Clock, AES/EBU or the D/A input, and also the mode of the digital output. The A/D section of the RB-ADDA2 operates in the same four modes as the RB-ADDA: In 'Master' mode additional clock rates are available at 176.4kHz or 192kHz. When operating in sync modes, the SYNC button flashes whenever the unit is not synchronised to the incoming digital signal. In 'Slave' mode the unit is synchronised to an external source, or to the TTL level word-clock. The 'Frequency' LED will indicate the synchronised sample frequency and if no sync is present, no output will be generated. In 'Auto' mode the unit is synchronised to an external source, using the digital audio sync or D/A input signal from which the clock signals are stripped, or to the TTL level Word Clock. If no sync signal is present the unit runs from the onboard master clock at a rate selected by the front panel control. 'Auto lock' mode operates like the auto mode except that if no sync signal is present the unit will run at the closest master clock rate to the last locked incoming signal. The 'Frequency' LED will indicate the synchronised sample frequency.

The D/A section has one 'Source' push-button which selects the input source from AES/EBU, S/PDIF or TOSlink optical and also sets the analogue output level to be generated for full scale digits, +12dBFS, +18dBFS or +24dBFS. There are internal level controls for fine tuning the analogue output gain adjustment. If no digital audio source is present, the 'D/A Source' button flashes.

AUDIO EMBEDDERS AND DE-EMBEDDERS

Housed in the familiar Redbox chassis, 1U rack-mounting, with a universal power supply, these designs offer embedding and de-embedding for analogue and digital audio signals into and out of 3G, HD and SD-SDI video signals. They have simple controls, and offer remote operation on serial and ethernet ports using Sonifex SCi software. The range offers embedding only, de-embedding only and models with both embedding and de-embedding capability.

Common Features

All have a triple-rate SDI receiver with automatic input-rate detection and equalisation as well as two re-clocked and individually buffered SDI outputs. They support the full range of 3G, SD and HD standards from NTSC and PAL up to 1080p 60Hz.

Where analogue inputs and outputs are present, input and output full-scale gain settings can be set with jumpers inside the case. The analogue audio input and output connections are balanced, connected in parallel on both mutipin and floating BNC connectors. One type can be used per output, they may be connected unbalanced without loss of level.

The de-embedding and embedding channel routing is controlled via three sets of controls on the front panel, all consisting of illuminating push-buttons with an arc of LEDs. The first set varies according to model and is used to select embedding and de-embedding parameters. The second set, labelled 'SDI', has two switches, each with four LEDS marked 1 to 4, to select SDI 'Group' and 'Group channel' respectively. These are used in conjunction with the first set of switches to select which of the audio channels, 1 to 4, from which group, 1 to 4, in the SDI stream is routed to which connector on the rear. The third is marked 'Status' and has seven LEDs: Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 'SDI Lock', 'SDI Out 1', 'SDI Out 2'. An LED indicates power.

The rear panel in each case has a female BNC connector for the SDI video input, two BNC connectors for two re-clocked SDI video outputs as well as 9-pin female D-sub and RJ45 connectors for RS232 serial and 10/100Mb/s ethernet remote control respectively. An IEC inlet with adjacent fuse provides the AC power connection.

RB-VHCMD16 - Embedder and de-embedder, 16x digital in, out

This selectively de-embeds any channel within any audio group contained within the video stream to any of the digital outputs. After which, the video becomes two independent streams, where the audio groups can be selectively deleted or passed through. The unit then embeds any of the digital input channels to available groups within each of the two video streams, which are then re-clocked and sent to the SDI outputs.

Each digital input is normally sample-rate converted to 48kHz before embedding, so that it is synchronous to the video input. Sample-rate conversion can be bypassed on a per-bank basis allowing SMPTE-337M data to be embedded. All digital outputs are output at 48kHz, synchronous to the video input. The digital inputs and outputs can be selected as AES or S/PDIF via jumpers situated inside the unit. The AES/EBU and S/PDIF input and output connectors are connected in parallel, allowing one type to be used per input or output.

In addition to the common features, this has a group of three buttons to select audio embedding and de-embedding parameters. The first has four LED indicators and selects 'Bank' from a choice 1, 2, 3, 4. The second selects 'Bank Chan' from a choice of 1, 2, 3, 4. Intended for use in voice-over booths, news and commentary booths, these contribution units offer a microphone input, as well as a headphone amplifier for cue and programme signals.

RB-MTV1 – Contribution and voiceover unit with talkback

Built in a 1U high, rack-mounting case, the device offers a single microphone channel, routing to a talkback output, two main outputs, for studio and local recorder, say, and the monitor system. The incoming cue and programme inputs are stereo. They could be used, for example, for an off-air feed and remote studio output. The talkback input is mono, and might come from a remote studio talkback system.

The front panel has two large illuminated switches, 'talk' and 'mic', for routing the signal to the 'talk' ('lazy') output, for use as a return talkback feed to another studio, and the main outputs respectively. When the 'talk' function is active, the microphone signal on the main outputs is muted. The 'talk' function is available even if the 'mic' function is inactive. Between the two switches is an LED to show when the microphone limiter is in action, and a five stage LED bar-graph. This may be configured to show the level of the microphone signal prior to the switching or only when the signal is connected to the main outputs. Four rotary controls adjust the mix of the microphone, talkback, cue and programme signals to the headphone amplifiers, routed as determined by a matrix controlled by two banks of DIP switches on the underside of the unit. It is possible to route the microphone, talkback, cue left and right, programme left and right signals into neither, either or both earpieces of the headphones. A 6.35 mm jack socket provides the headphone connection, wired in parallel with a similar connector on the rear.

The rear panel has a headphone socket, two male XLR connectors providing the main outputs, each with an adjacent switch to choose either microphone or line level, a male XLR for the 'lazy' output, and five female XLR connectors for the mono talkback and stereo cue and programme inputs. The pairs of cue and programme connectors each have a single switch to increase the gain of the signals by 10dB, so that unbalanced sources may be used. The remaining XLR provides the microphone input, and has an associated switch to activate the limiter, while two multi-turn screwdriver operated controls adjust gain and limiter threshold. All XLR connections are balanced. A 9-pin female D-sub connector offers access to the remote control of the 'mic' and 'talk' functions, and opto-isolated indicator outputs for each. A bank of DIP switches enable the phantom powering, low-cut filter, and extra 20dB microphone gain, as well as the option to mute the microphone signal to the headphones when the 'talk' function is activated. A filtered IEC inlet, with adjacent fuse, provides the power connection.

Microphone input: -10dBu maximum, 2kohms. Phantom power: 48V Common mode rejection: Better than 60dB, typically. Microphone gain: +20dB to +80dB, adjustable. Noise: -130dB E.I.N. DELAY SYNCHRONISERS

RB-DS2 - Delay Synchroniser

With both balanced analogue and AES/EBU digital audio inputs and outputs, the RB-DS2 can act as a combined A/D and D/A unit with delay in stereo or dual mono, or a mixture of digital and analogue connections can be used on input and output. Uses include resynchronising audio to video following delay processes such as standards conversion, transmission delay, logo insertion, video aspect ratio conversion and network delays, or with the internal compact flash option to provide delay times of over 69 hours, for example, to delay a programme output across different time-zones, or to shift a broadcast programme by one hour for a satellite rebroadcast.

Intended for both fixed installations to correct a permanent audio delay, or on an intermittent basis to provide occasional correction, for example for live links, the RB-DS2 accepts digital audio signals up to 96kHz, 24-bit and can provide up to 10.5 seconds of delay at that rate. An internal expansion socket can accept a 16GB Compact Flash card, providing delay times of over 69 hours at a 32kHz, 16-bit rate.

The front panel has a large bypass button which diverts both analogue and digital inputs to their outputs. Since electro-mechanical relays are used, this occurs automatically if power is disconnected. A blue vacuum fluorescent display with rotary controller is used for selecting the various settings of the delay, which include the source (analogue or digital), channels, sample-rate, sample bit-width, format (PAL or NTSC), delay units and the delay itself. Additionally, input peak digits can be selected from +12dBu, +18dBu and +24dBu for FSD. (Pre-set trim controls on the rear panel alter the gain +/-3dB about the selected peak digits.) The analogue output gain range can be altered in software from -6dBu to +24dBu output level, ref FSD; both analogue and digital outputs can be muted separately. Delay times can be selected in samples, fields, frames, milliseconds, metres and, with the Compact Flash expansion, in hh:mm:ss. Frame and field definitions can be for PAL (25 frame) or NTSC (30 frame) signals.

All of the settings in the unit can be saved to one of eight configuration settings. These configurations can be viewed, edited, saved and loaded, and also remotely loaded by using one of the eight remote control (GPI) contacts, so that any setting, such as delay time or bypass, can be altered instantaneously using a GPI signal. The GPI signals can also be set to act using the delay configured. The RS232 serial port, which is used for software upgrades, can also be used for remotely controlling the unit and there are four remote outputs which can be used for signalling. The front panel controls can be locked-out for situations where remote control is being used to run the unit, or where physical security is required. Control software for Windows platforms may be downloaded freely from the Sonifex website.

The rear panel has two 3-pin female XLR electronically balanced inputs with level trim controls, accessible by screwdriver. Two 3-pin male XLR connectors provide electronically balanced outputs. Digital connections are a 3-pin female XLR and a 3-pin male XLR for AES/EBU input and output. A 15-pin male D-sub connector provides remote control inputs and outputs; a 9-pin version serves as the RS232 port. Power is supplied through an IEC inlet, with associated fuseholder.

Analogue audio input: +28dBu maximum, 10kohms, balanced. Noise: Better than -101dBFS RMS, A-weighted, 24-bit. Distortion: better than 96dB THD + N, 1kHz, ref +8dBu. Sampling frequency: 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 64kHz, 88.2kHz or 96kHz. Sample width: 16-bit or 24-bit. Analogue audio output: +24dBu maximum, 50ohms, balanced. Dynamic range: 100dB. Power source: 85-264V AC, 47-63Hz, 60W peak, 30W average. Dimensions: 480(w) x 158(d) x 42(h) mm. Weight: 1.7kg.

Optional accessories: The RB-RK3 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse, with connectors outward. RB-DS2R Remote Switch Panel. A Compact Flash card supporting PIO Mode 4 or higher, up to 16GB capacity, may be fitted internally. Microdrives are not supported.

RB-DS2R - Remote Panel

The RB-DS2R is a remote panel for controlling up to four separate RB-DS2 units. The 1U 19-inch rack-mounting panel has four rotary switches, each with eight available selections numbered 0 to 7, used for selecting the delay time in frames. On the rear of the unit are four 15-way D-sub connectors for connecting to the remote input of RB-DS2 units. The RB-DS2R is passive; there is no power supply.

DIGITAL AUDIO DELAYS

RB-DD4 - Delay Synchroniser

Aimed at such applications as synchronising audio to video which has been delayed by processing latency, the RB-DD4 can delay four mono channels of digital audio independently or together. Each channel delay is may be selected from multiples of common video frame-rates, or a user defined value set via the serial interface. There are three different types of connection to each input and output, AES/EBU, S/PDIF and TOSLink. All three different types of output can be used simultaneously. The digital audio output can be synchronised to either input, an AES/EBU reference input, a TTL word-clock BNC input or an analogue/SDI video feed if used with optional boards. The output can also be synchronised to an on-board master clock, with a selectable frame-rate. In the case of power failure AES and S/PDIF signal inputs are routed to outputs, essential for environments such as transmitter sites.

In the synchronisation 'Master' mode the output sample-rate is simply set by, and locked to, the internal on-board clock generator. No sync signal is used or required. In 'Auto-sync' mode output sample-rate follows the selected sync input. When the sync signal is not present the output sample-rate will be set by, and locked to, the internal on-board clock generator at the selected output frequency. In 'Auto Lock' mode no output will be generated until lock is achieved with a sync signal. The output sample-rate then follows the sync input. If the sync signal is removed then the output sample-rate will be set by, and locked to, the internal on-board clock generator at the closest frequency available to the previous sync input. In 'Slave' mode the output sample-rate follows the sync input. When the sync signal is not present the digital output is turned off. Using the Sonifex SCi serial software, the unit can be programmed to apply different delay durations for specific applications.

The front panel, with the familiar Redbox red-anodised finish, has five momentary switches each with an arc of LED indicators. The first is used to set the delay of the channel chosen using the channel select group. The indicators are dual purpose. The delay is marked in frames per second: 23.98 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60. These refer to a delay of one frame at that frame-rate. A multiplier is then applied; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 'user defined' are indicated. The next switch is the 'Channel Select' switch. This chooses which channel is being displayed or set: 1, 2, 3, 4 or all. The third switch selects which source is used for each of channels one and two; three LEDs above the button illustrate which source AES, S/PDIF or Optical, is selected, the button itself is illuminated when the input is locked, two bicolour LEDs, show input presence and give an indication of the input level. The fourth switch provides the same functionality for channels three and four. The final switch selects which channel is fed to the adjacent headphone socket with level control.

The rear panel has two groups of connectors, one for inputs one for outputs. Each has two sets of: An XLR connector for balanced AES/EBU digital connections, an RCA (phono) connector for S/PDIF and a Toslink optical connector. One set is for channels one and two, the second for channels three and four. An XLR provides an input for AES/EBU sync and a BNC for word-clock. The aperture for the BNC connector of optional video sync boards is capped. The serial port and 'remotes' connectors are 9-pin and 15-pin D-sub types, respectively. Power is connected by an IEC inlet. A DIP switch provides the following settings: The sample rate the output is set to in 'Master' mode; the input used as the source of synchronisation; the synchronisation mode, Master, Auto sync, Auto lock or Slave; whether the headphone operates in stereo (listening to either inputs one and two as a pair or three and four as a pair) or they operate in mono, with ones channel sent to both earphones; headphone attenuation for low impedance headphones; remote control by RS232, defeating DIP-switch control.

Distortion and Noise: Better than -137dB THD + N at 1kHz, ref 0dB FS. Sample frequencies: 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96,176.4 or 192kHz. Bit-depth: Up to and including 24-bit. Maximum delay: 8 seconds per mono channel at 32kHz, 1.33 seconds per mono channel at 192kHz. Latency at 0 frames delay: 0.8ms / 4.2ms, 192kHz / 32kHz sample-rate. Delay: 0 frames to 19 frames may be selected on the front panel. Delay above 0 frames corrected for latency. Frames, lines, fields, milliseconds and samples up to total delay time may be selected by the SCi software. Frame rates: 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60fps may be selected on the front panel. The SCi software can set the rate to 525/29.97, 625/25, 720/60p,720/59.94p, 720/50p, 720/30p, 720/29.97p, 720/25p, 720/24p, 720/23.98p, 1035/60i, 1035/59.94i, 1080/60i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, 1080/30p, 1080/29.97p, 1080/25p, 1080/24p, 1080/23.98p, 1080/30pSF, 1080/29.97pSF, 1080/25pSF, 1080/24pSF, 1080/23.98pSF, 1080/60p, 1080/59.94p, 1080/50p. RB-DA6P - Distribution Amplifier, Phoenix Connectors

Sharing the specifications and accessory set of the RB-DA6 audio distribution amplifier, this uses Neutrik 'Phoenix' style terminal connectors instead of XLR inputs and outputs. The rear is fitted with fourteen 3-pole connectors. Each DA is shipped with the mating connectors so that wires can be simply terminated using a small flat-blade screwdriver.

RB-DA6G - Distribution Amplifier, XLR Connectors, Gain Trims

This variant has the specifications and functionality of the RB-DA6, however it has twelve separate output gain-adjustment trimmers on the front panel. Accessories as RB-DA6

RB-DA6R - Distribution Amplifier, RJ45 Connectors

Again based on the RB-DA6 (see above), this design differs in the inputs available and the output connectors. The two balanced XLR connectors remain as inputs, wired in parallel with a single RJ45 connector carrying the two balanced signals. A push switch on the rear selects between either these balanced connections or a pair of RCA (phono) sockets, offering unbalanced inputs. The outputs are available from six RJ45 sockets, each carrying a pair of signals. All RJ45 connectors are wired to the 'StudioHub+' standard, and can be used to connect to other equipment or infrastructure using low-cost standard RJ45 patch cords.

RB-DA4x5 - Distribution Amplifier/Mixer

This model has four mono 3-pin XLR inputs, and four groups of five outputs on 15-pin, male D-sub connectors. All inputs and outputs can be wired balanced, or unbalanced, without loss of level, for use with domestic equipment. Each output has a separate buffer amplifier so that loading or a short circuit on one output of a group does not affect the others.

Front panel has four, tri-colour LED audio presence indicators to show the input signals or the level of the output groups, selected by a single switch. A removable panel conceals four gain trimmers for inputs and four for output level. Miniature switches configure the internal routing; each of the four output groups is fed from a mix of the four input signals or a test tone signal.

Optional accessories: The RB-RK2 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse. The RB-FR3 front-panel kit allows the device to be used without rack-mounting ears.

RB-HD6 - Headphone Distribution Amplifier, Six Separate Outputs

A rack-mounting stereo headphone amplifier with two main inputs, the RB-HD6 distributes stereo audio to up to six headphone outlets, each with its own volume control. Alternatively, the unit can be used as six separate stereo headphone-amplifiers, by using the override inputs associated with each outlet. A typical application might be to provide common headphone feeds for guests around a table in a radio studio, with a separately derived feed, perhaps including talk-back, for the presenter.

The front panel has six 3-pole, 6.35mm, A-gauge jack outlet each with an individual volume control offering a range of -60dB to +18dB gain. A master gain-control provides +\-10dB gain. This may be disabled internally.

On the rear are the two main electronically balanced inputs, using XLR-3F connectors, and a input selection switch which allows summing of the two inputs to provide a mono feed from a stereo input or to feed a mono input to both channels of the system.
Six 3-pole, 6.35mm, A-gauge jacks provide unbalanced ports to inject a separate override programme feed. Note that the master gain-control will not affect the level of channels using an override input. Alternatively these sockets can be individually configured using internal jumpers to provide a parallel output of the front headphone socket. The power connection is an IEC inlet, with fuse and voltage selection switch.

Main inputs: +28dBu maximum, 20kohms (main). Override inputs: +3dBu for full volume at +18dB gain, 10kohms. Outputs: 150mW into 32-600 ohm headphones. Power source: 110-120V or 220-240V AC 9W maximum. Dimensions: 1U rack-mounting, 108mm deep. Weight: 1.4kg.

LIGHT SWITCHING UNITS

RB-LC3 - Light/Power Controller

RB-LC3 is a triple-output switching unit for controlling external indicators operating on AC supply voltages, primarily studio status lights for broadcasting applications, such as On-Air, Mic-Live and Rehearsal / Live lights. Each output can be individually controlled by one of three remote-control inputs, by a telephony input (when ringing, or off-hook, or both), or a combination of two inputs (to control two outputs, for Rehearsal/Live applications or similar).

The type of control is set using a 12-way DIP switch. There are four switches for each output, allowing 16 different settings. Remote control inputs can be “pulled” high or low to operate the light. All connections are on the rear panel. The three IEC outputs are controlled by zero-crossing point drivers to reduce interference. When an output is activated, the AC voltage at that output will be equal to the mains input voltage used to power the unit. A pre-set potentiometer on the rear panel controls the flash rate of the output when the appropriate mode is selected. Neon indicators on each power socket show the status of the AC output.

The telephone line input and handset output are via two RJ11-4 type connectors. The telephone connections are wired pin-to-pin from line to handset except when the remote “ring mute” control input is asserted. In this case the ring signal to the handset is muted. The status of the telephone line is continually monitored so that Handset ringing and off-hook conditions can be indicated.
Inputs: One telephone line, RJ11-4 socket; remote control, 0V- 5V DC, 15-way D-sub. Outputs: Handset , RJ11-4 socket; remote control, open-collector 20mA sink capability, sharing D-sub connector. Switched AC outputs: three, IEC, 1A fused.

Included accessories: Handbook, IEC supply cable with plug.
Optional accessories: RB-RK1, RB-RK2 1U rackmount kits.

Power source: 110V-240V auto-adjusting, fused, 6W plus power to load, IEC inlet. Dimensions (WxDxH): 280 x 108 x 42mm. Weight: 1.0kg

LIMITERS

Two-channel limiters, useful in radio and TV news-rooms, control rooms and other locations where assistance with level control is required, for protection of mixer inputs and to prevent distortion. Models are available with line inputs and now with microphone/line inputs.

All models are housed in red-anodised aluminium cases with apertures for fixing screws, they can be attached to any flat surface, or rack-mounted from the front with the standard front panels, or in reverse, with the rear panel facing out of the rack, using accessory panels.

RB-ML2 - Two channels, Microphone/Line

Discontinued

With inputs and outputs that can be switched to microphone or line signal level, the RB-ML2 is particularly useful for news gathering as the input to PC workstations. It can operate in stereo or dual mono modes.

The front panel has a power indicator which also acts as a limit indicator. The rear has two electronically balanced 3-pin XLR inputs; each of these has a push-button to select microphone or line input sensitivity, and a recessed level control accessed by screwdriver. RB-PA2 - RIAA Phono Preamplifier, Dual Stereo

For use with broadcast and club turntables and where vinyl discs must be transferred to digital storage, this pre-amplifier takes signals from the pick-ups of two turntables and applies the necessary amplification and RIAA equalisation to provide two stereo, balanced, line-level outputs. Intended for use with moving magnet or high output moving coil magnetic phono cartridges with a nominal output of 1mV to 25mV, the design has been specifically tested to work with the Technics SL-1200 and 1210 range of turntables.

The front panel is devoid of controls, but has a power indicator.

The rear panel has two groups of audio connectors, one for each turntable. Each has a pair of RCA (phono) sockets for the pick-up, with a convenient terminal to earth the pick-up arm, and two female 3-pin XLR connectors for the electronically balanced outputs, which may be wired unbalanced if required. PROFANITY DELAYS

For use in live broadcast programs to prevent unwanted or obscene material from being transmitted, this delay unit is intended for insertion in the studio output path. An automatic audio 'stretch' algorithm allows between 2 and 55 seconds of delay to be built up live whilst 'on air', whilst maintaining the correct pitch. Alternatively the delay can be acquired whilst playing a pre-selected audio file on a Compact Flash memory card. Once 'in delay', unwanted material may be removed from the output by several ways, involving the deletion of a number of seconds of the buffered audio signal or substituting an audio file from the memory card. Both balanced analogue and AES/EBU digital audio inputs and outputs are provided.

The unit can act as a combined analogue to digital and digital to analogue converter: Analogue inputs can be output as AES/EBU signals and vice versa.

RB-PD2 - Profanity Delay, Stereo

Housed in a red-anodised aluminium rack-mounting case, the delay is intended to be mounted in a studio or equipment room and operated using the controls on the front panel, or the various remote options. The controls on the front panel can be locked out, in situations where remote control is being used to run the unit, or where physical security is required. Sonifex SCi software, available free of charge as a download from Sonifex, when installed on a suitable PC, provides graphical access to all remote control and configuration options via both RS232 and USB interfaces. Alternatively, commands may be issued from any text-based terminal application.

The front panel is dominated by a vacuum fluorescent display which displays permanently the current delay value, in seconds, and the current status of the unit. An associated rotary selector with integral push-switch is used for selecting the various settings, which include the start delay and dump modes, safe period, source (analogue or digital), sample-rate and sample bit-width as well as the required delay time. Four push buttons offer 'Build Delay', 'Exit Delay', which ramps the delay down to return to real-time output, 'Audio Bypass', which disengages relays to divert both analogue and digital inputs to their outputs and 'Cough', which allows locally generated sounds being presented at the inputs, such as the presenter coughing or equipment switching noises, to be discarded. A larger button operates the dump function, which has two different modes. The first removes a section of audio that has already been buffered, by a pre-selected amount. The second mode plays a pre-selected audio file on the memory card inserted in the CF slot, which supports cards up to 2GB. When the file has finished playing, the delay is then equal to the duration of the file. The dump button can be used multiple times to use up the built-up delay and once used, the unit starts to rebuild the original delay time automatically. As a last resort, all the buffered audio can be discarded by pressing and holding the dump button, thus activating the 'Drop' function. A dedicated record mode allows audio presented at either the analogue or digital inputs to be recorded to a linear WAV file on the memory card. Files may be transferred to and from the card using a PC.

The rear panel has two pairs of XLR connectors for balanced line-level analogue inputs and outputs. The inputs have adjacent trimmers of level. A further pair of XLRs are used for the AES/EBU digital input and output. A 15-pin male D-Sub connector provides external control; eight inputs and six outputs are assignable freely. The inputs can be used to trigger any of the unit’s functions such as build delay, activate cough or enter record mode and start a new recording. The outputs can provide external signaling to indicate when certain events have occurred such as the delay reaching the required value or the outputs being muted. A 9-pin male D-Sub connector provides an RS232 serial port. Power is connected by a filtered IEC inlet, with adjacent fuse.

Sampling frequency: 32kHz, 44.1kHz or 48kHz. Sample width: 16-bit or 24-bit. Minimum delay: 2 seconds. Maximum delay: 55/27.5 seconds at 16/24 bits, 32kHz; 40/20 seconds at 16/24 bits, 44.1kHz; 37/18.5 seconds at 16/24 bits, 48 kHz.

Analogue audio inputs: +28dBu maximum, 10kohms. Analogue and digital level: +12dBu / +18dBu / +24dBu for FSD. Analogue trimmers: +/-3dB. Noise: Better than -101dBFS RMS, A-weighted, 24bit. RB-SC2 - Sample Rate Converter, Dual

RB-SC2 is an enhanced version of the RB-SC1 providing the following additional features:

It supports higher sample-rates up to and including 176.4kHz and 192kHz; two independent sample-rate converter circuits use a common clock-source to set the output sample rate; two video synchronising boards are available as options, these set the output sample-rate to 48kHz, synchronised to either an analogue video signal or SDI digital video signal (HD or SD); the 'X-Lock' sync mode allows the unit to function as a full bi-directional sample rate converter; a serial RS232 port is included so that the RB-SC2 settings can be controlled remotely.

Standard external sync modes are from the AES/EBU sync input, the Wordclock input or, for X-Lock, the other digital input. The X-Lock synchronisation allows the unit to act as a bi-directional sample rate converter with the output of sample rate converter one syncing the input of sample rate converter two and vice versa so that they follow each other. The application for the X-Lock mode is so that the RB-SC2 can be inserted between two digital devices which run at different sample-rates, such as a PC recorder and a digital player. Using X-Lock mode ensures that the two devices remain synchronised at all times regardless of the sample-rate of the two.

In the synchronisation 'Master' mode the output sample-rate is simply set by, and locked to, the internal on-board clock generator. No sync signal is used or required. In 'Auto- sync' mode output sample-rate follows the selected sync input.

The front panel, with the familiar Redbox red-anodised finish, has five momentary switches each with an arc of LED indicators. The first 'FREQUENCY' switch selects the sync frequency to be used when the unit is using the internal clock. The 'CS DATA' button defines the content of the channel status bits embedded within the digital audio stream, and can be forced to either professional mode, consumer mode or to follow the mode of the input. The 'INPUT 1' selects which input source is used for input one, from a choice of the AES/EBU, S/PDIF or TOSlink inputs. Three LEDs above the button illustrate which source is selected. The 'INPUT 2' switch provides the same functionality for input two. The 'SYNC' button allows the user to cycle through the synchronisation modes. The LEDS around the button display which mode has been selected.

The rear panel has two groups of connectors providing inputs and outputs for channels one and two respectively. Each has two XLR connectors for balanced AES/EBU digital connections, two RCA (phono) connectors for S/PDIF and two TOSlink optical connectors. An XLR provides an input for AES/EBU sync and a BNC for word-clock. The aperture for the BNC connector of optional video sync boards is capped. The serial port connector is a 9-pin D-sub types. Power is connected by an IEC inlet.

Sample frequencies: 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192kHz. Power source: 85-264V AC, 47- 63Hz, 10W maximum. Dimensions (WxDxH): 480 x 108 x 42mm, 1U. Weight: 1.4kg.

Included accessories: Manual, AC power cable.
Optional accessories: RB-RK3 rack kit, RB-SYA, RB-SYD.

Video Sync Boards

These sync boards, compatible with RB-SC2, RB-TGHDX and RB-TGHD8 mount inside the case, with a BNC connector protruding through a pre-punched aperture. They can be used to synchronise the outputs to a 48kHz sample rate.

RB-SYA

An analogue sync board will accept a composite signal of NTSC (525), PAL (625) and SECAM (625) signals covered by SMPTE-170-M (NTSC) and ITU-R BT.470-6 (PAL and SECAM).

RB-SYD

A digital video sync board will accept 270Mbps SD-SDI and HD-SDI signals covered by SMPTE-259-M-C (SD) and SMPTE-292M (HD).

SILENCE DETECTORS

Housed in red-anodised aluminium rack-mounting cases these Sonifex silence detectors are used to monitor an output feed and in the event of the signal going 'quiet' after a given period, switch through an alternative audio signal. This signal could be recorded material, or an alternative recorded program. While the obvious application is in radio broadcasting, the units are equally capable in any situation where it is important that an outgoing signal is maintained at all times.

RB-SD1 - Silence Detector, Analogue

Sonifex RB-SD1 has two stereo inputs, designated A and B, which are assigned as the Main or Aux signal using a switch on the front-panel. The front panel has four LEDs indicate programme presence and alarm conditions for each channel of the two sources. When the signal on any input remains below the threshold level for a preset period of time, the associated front panel alarm LED illuminates and if the audio routing feature is enabled, the output is switched to the Aux signal. Three further indicators are used to show the status of the Source, Mode and Restore functions, adjacent to push switches for setting these functions.

For mono sources, the alarm can be set to trigger on the loss of signal level on either input channel, and for stereo sources the alarm triggers when both left and right inputs fail. In manual restore mode, the alarm must be reset from the front panel or remotely. If the automatic restore mode is chosen, the main source will be routed to the output two seconds after the programme returns.

The unit is equipped for remote operation; the alarm outputs from both Main and Aux detectors and the front-panel switch functions available. A start signal is also available to activate an external device, such as a tape or CD player, when the alarm triggers. The audio inputs and outputs are designed for balanced line level connections. However, in consumer mode, Input B accepts unbalanced equipment and applies 12 dB of make-up gain.

The rear panel has two pairs of female 3-pin XLR connectors for inputs A and B, and one pair of 3-pin XLR outputs. In the un-powered state, input connectors ‘A’ are routed to the output. There are two 16-position rotary switches; silence detect level is adjustable between -60dBu and -15dBu in 3dBu steps and silence interval can also be adjusted between 2 and 30 seconds in 2 second steps. An additional maximum delay setting of 125 seconds is available, which can also activated remotely to minimise false alarms on quiet programme passages. A 15-pin male D-sub connector provides connections for the remote controls.

RB-DSD1 - Silence Detector, Digital

The RB-DSD1 works in a similar way to the Sonifex RB-SD1 analogue silence detection unit, but has AES/EBU, S/PDIF and TOSlink inputs and outputs instead of analogue inputs and output respectively. All three different types of output can be used simultaneously. Sample-rate converters on each input provide for sources of different sample-rates to be mixed while the output sample-rate is defined independently. The digital audio output can be synchronised to either input, an AES/EBU reference input, a TTL word-clock BNC input or an analogue or SDI video feed if used with optional boards.

In 'Auto- sync' mode output sample-rate follows the selected sync input.

The front panel has four momentary switches each with an arc of LED indicators. The first 'MAIN' switch selects which input source is used for the main input. Three LEDs above a backlit button illustrate which source is selected. There are also green and red LEDs, one of each for both left and right channels to show the programme and alarm state of the input. Programme LEDs will be illuminated if the level is above the current silence threshold. If the input is in an alarmed state, red alarm LEDs will illuminate. A 'RESTORE' button is used for restoring the main source signal when the unit is operating in manual mode. This can be remotely controlled using the remotes connector.

A small panel may be unscrewed to reveal three banks of miniature (DIP) switches to adjust the duration over which a silence is detected before alarming from the default 30 seconds to 2-252 seconds in two second intervals. A second bank adjusts the level below which silence detection occurs and can be varied from -39dBFS to -84dBFS in 3dB steps. A third bank defines switching when incoming source goes silent. When in stereo mode, if one channel goes quiet the unit will switch, and requires both channels to be present before it switches back. In mono mode the unit will only switch when both channels go quiet, and requires only one channel to be present before the unit switches back.

The rear panel has two groups of connectors, one for inputs one for outputs. Each has two XLR connectors for balanced AES/EBU digital connections, two RCA (phono) connectors for S/PDIF and two TOSlink optical connectors, one of each for stereo channels one and two. An XLR provides an input for AES/EBU sync and a BNC for word-clock. The serial port and 'remotes' connectors are 9-pin and 15-pin D-sub types, respectively. Power is connected by an IEC inlet. A miniature (DIP) switch-bank provides switching between ‘master’, ‘restore’, ‘remote start’, ‘channel loss’ and ‘sync loss’ modes.

Distortion and Noise: Better than -137dB THD + N at 1kHz, ref 0dB FS. Sample frequencies: 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192kHz. Bit-depth: Up to and including 24-bit. Power source: 85-264V AC, 47- 63Hz, 10W maximum. Dimensions (WxDxH): 480 x 108 x 42mm, 1U. Weight: 1.4kg.

Included accessories: Manual, AC power cable.
Optional accessories: RB-RK3 Rear rack panel kit, RB-SYA, RB-SYD

Video Sync Boards

These sync boards, compatible with RB-DSD1, RB-SC2, RB-TGHDX and RB-TGHD8 mount inside the case, with a BNC connector protruding through a pre-punched aperture.

SOURCE SELECTORS

RB-SS10 - Source Selector, Stereo Analogue

Sonifex RB-SS10 is a 1U rack-mounting unit that produces a stereo analogue audio output from ten selectable stereo analogue sources. There are ten illuminated push buttons on the front panel, which select and indicate the current channel selection. The selection and indication is also available through a remote connector on the rear panel. As well as being able to act as a source select module, the RB-SS10 can act as a mixer, by enabling the mix mode (using the “remote” input). The front-panel headphone output has its own volume control, which is independent of the level adjustment for the main outputs, and has a maximum output level of +12dBu. The volume control can be made to alter the output level of the main XLR outputs also, by using a switch on the rear panel to enable/disable this feature.

To stop accidental selection using the switches on the front, there is an input on the rear to inhibit the front panel buttons. The gain for left and right inputs can be individually adjusted by using the preset potentiometers on the front panel. A LED on the front panel indicates that power is present. As well as routing the selected audio signal, the unit will also route a remote-control signal, input through the “remote” connector, to the selected input source, for starting external audio equipment such as a CD player. A designation-strip on the front panel is useful for giving the buttons a meaningful description. The strip covers the input gain controls so that once configured, they can’t be altered easily.

Inputs: Four XLR 3-pin female, balanced (can be unbalanced); two 25-way D-sub female, with three stereo channels, balanced, on each. Outputs: Two XLR 3-pin male, balanced (can be unbalanced). Remote start input/output: 25-way D-sub male. Remote select and switch inputs: 25-way D-sub female. Status outputs: 25-way D-sub female.

Input impedance: 20kohms. Output impedance: <50ohms. Maximum input level: +28dBu. Maximum output level: +28dBu. Frequency response: 20Hz to 20kHz +/-0.1dB, 600ohms load, ref 1kHz. Input gain: 8dB loss to 20dB gain, separately adjustable. Common mode rejection: >66dB typically. Noise: -96dB, unity gain, ref +8dBu. Headphone output: +12dBu maximum. Power source: 110V-120V, or 220-240V, switchable, 6W, filtered IEC inlet. Dimensions (WxDxH): 480 x 108 x 42mm, (1U). Weight: 1.6kg.

Included accessories: Handbook, IEC supply cable with plug.
Optional accessories: RB-RK3 1U rear panel rack kit

TRANSMISSION SWITCHERS

RB-OA3 - On-Air Switcher, Three Studios

The unit connects three stereo audio pairs to the equipment room. These are switched to connect to one of the three 'Studios'. They are switched using latching relays, so can be used in either direction, and remain connected if power is lost. One pair is the stereo transmission path. The other 'peripheral' paths may be used for such purposes as telephone hybrid connections, or codecs for incoming contributions. A fourth stereo pair is also switched. This sends to the studio a feed of the 'last studio to offer' so that this may be faded to air and a seamless changeover between studios may be accomplished. One more stereo input is provided for a 'transmission mix' feed, intended to inject a service such as an automated jingle or advert play-out system directly into the transmission system without going through the studios. One of the 'studio' connections may be used for the connection of a sustaining service such as a PC based automation system, off-air tuner, incoming satellite feed or other programme circuit.

Internal logic provides for a studio to 'offer' control to the other studios, which can then be accepted by another studio; that studio then has control of the transmission and the delay system, if fitted. Where one of the 'studio' connections is used for a sustaining service, which may not be able to 'offer' control, a special key-press sequence is used to take control by another studio.

An RB-OA3 can be expanded to switch between up to five studios or up to six stereo pairs by connecting a multiple of units together via RJ45 serial connections. With the addition of a single unit, expansion in 'studio' mode allows for two additional studios to take control of the transmission path and additional equipment. If the expansion is made in 'bus' mode, then three additional stereo channels can be added. Four RB-OA3 units can be connected together to switch six stereo pairs between up to five studios. Each additional unit requires an RB-OA3C expansion unit cable kit.

The front panel of the 1U rack-mounting case has a power LED and status indicators for Dump, Delay, Offer, Studio 1, Studio 2, Studio 3. On the rear are D-sub connectors for audio and control. Two serial ports and a miniature switch bank provide control and configuration for expansion. Power is input by an IEC connector with adjacent fuse-holder.

Control panels are available for Sonifex S2 consoles, which may also be fitted to other equipment. The RB-OA3R remote switch panels are also suitable, see below. Alternatively control may be implemented using customer-provided circuitry using momentary push-buttons and indicators.

Included accessories: Handbook, AC power cordset with plug.
Optional accessories: The RB-RK3 (1U) rear-panel kit allows the device to be rack-mounted in reverse, with connectors outward. The RB-OA3R Remote switch panels may be used in each area where remote control is desired. RB-OA3C expansion cables may be used to add an extra RB-OA3R to an existing unit.

RB-OA3C - Expansion Unit Cable Kit, For RB-OA3

If another RB-OA3 is added to an existing unit, three cables are needed to connect it. The kit contains 1x transmission output expansion cable, 1x LSO expansion cable and 1x RS232 expansion cable. All are 300mm long.

RB-OA3R - Remote Switch Panel, For RB-OA3

Where there are no suitable panels for fitting custom switches for remotely controlling the RG-OA3, this standard control panel can be used. It is 1U rack mounting, for fitting in studio furniture or equipment racks.

The front panel has four LED-illuminated push buttons which are used to control the 'OFFER', 'ACCEPT', 'DELAY' and 'DUMP' functions. The rear panel has a single 15-pin D-sub connector to connect to the RB-OA3, which provides the power for the remote panel.

TONE GENERATORS

These eight channel, audio tone generators provide line identification for multi-channel audio systems, including 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound typically used in high definition television broadcasts. By using a range of widely accepted industry standard tone sequences including the EBU R49, GLITS and BLITS tones, channel identification and associated levels can be determined easily. Correct channel configuration in fold-down mixes can also be highlighted when a broadcaster needs to mix several audio channels into a stereo feed. External synchronisation is by word-clock or optional boards to provide analogue video, digital audio or digital video inputs. The units are 1U rack-mounting.

RB-TGHDX - Tone Generator, XLR Digital Outputs

The generator offers the choice of the following tone sequences: EBU R49 stereo line-up, GLITS stereo line-up, BLITS stereo line-up, EBU R49 channel ID, BLITS channel ID, Phase and user-defined sequences. The audio level line-up level can be adjusted to suit different environments. Changing the audio line-up does not affect the gain relationship between each channel, ensuring that correct levels through the target system can be maintained. The serial port allows the RB-TGHD to be connected to a PC running SCi, the Sonifex Serial Control Interface. This allows full control of the unit and the ability to generate a user-defined audio tone sequence. In addition, a remote port provides a simple interface to control the unit and has several outputs to indicate which tone sequence is active.

The front panel has an LED to show power. Eight LEDS marked 1 to 8 as well as L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs, Lr, Rr, show activity on the eight outputs. A further LED indicates when the unit is synchronised to an external word-clock signal or optional video sync cards. There are four push buttons, each with a set of LED indicators arranged in an arc. The first button selects how many channels are fed with signals, either 2, 4, 6 or 8. The second selects sequence mode, either automatic or manual. The third selects the tone output sequence, while the final button sets the sequence to play once or loop. A short press on the button restarts the sequence. A small panel may be unscrewed to reveal two banks of eight miniature (DIP) switches, which set the sample rate, sync mode, bit-rate and audio line-up level.

The rear panel has eight male XLR connectors providing the eight analogue outputs, which are also marked ‘L’, ‘R’, ‘C’, ‘LFE’, ‘Ls’, ‘Rs’, ‘Lr’, ‘Rr’. The AES/EBU balanced digital outputs are provided with four more male XLR connectors, marked ‘1+2’, ‘3+4’, ‘5+6’, ‘7+8’ as well as ‘L+R’, ‘C+LFE’, ‘Ls+Rs’, ‘Lr+Rr’ respectively. 9-pin and 25-pin female D-sub connectors provide the RS232 serial port and the remote control connections. A BNC connector provides a word-clock sync input, which is also used for the optional sync boards if fitted. The IEC AC power inlet has an adjacent fuse.

Analogue output: +24V maximum, 50 ohms. Distortion: Better than -85dB THD+N, 1kHz. Dynamic range: Better than 100dB. Crosstalk: Better than -110dB, 20Hz to 20kHz, for analogue outputs. Sample frequency: 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192kHz switched. Sample width: 16 or 24 bits, switched. Audio line-up level: 0dBu to +24dBu, in 1dB steps, for FSD, switched. Power source: 85-264V AC, 47-63Hz, 60W peak, 30W average. Dimensions (WxDxH): 480 x 158 x 43mm, 1U rack mounting. Weight: 1.3kg.

Included accessories: Manual, AC power cable.
Optional accessories: RB-RK3 Rear rack panel kit. Sync boards, see below.

RB-TGHDB - Tone Generator, BNC Digital Outputs

This is similar to the RB-TGHDX except that rather than four balanced XLR connectors for the AES/EBU digital audio outputs, there are four BNC types for unbalanced connections. Specifications and accessories are the same

Sync Boards

These mount inside the case, with a BNC connector protruding through a pre-punched aperture. They can be used to synchronise the outputs to a 48kHz sample rate. They are available as factory options replacing the standard word-clock board.

RB-SYE

An AES/EBU sync board will accept a digital audio input signal with a sample frequency between 32kHz and 192 kHz. When using it, the channel status information that is encoded in the input data signal is copied to all digital output channels.

ACCESSORIES

Sonifex Redboxes are built in two different extrusions, with front and rear panels screwed to the extrusion. The different types are supplied either: as surface-mounting types, which may be attached to any flat surface, such as the underside of studio furniture, using the apertures in the case for fixing screws; or as “rack-mounting” types which have a 1U front panel attached.

RB-RK1, RB-RK2, RB-RK3

The surface mounting types may be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack using the accessory RB-RK1 Front panel rack-mounting kit. This has an aperture for the power indicator, but all other features will be inside the rack. The RB-RK2 and RB-RK3 mounting kits are intended to mount these products in “reverse”, so that connectors and other features are available on the outside of the rack. Both types have an aperture to run the supply cable through to the inside of the rack if required. See below for compatibility.

The rack-mounting types, obviously, may be mounted by the attached rack-mounting FRONT panel, but may also be mounted in reverse using the RB-RK2 and RB-RK3 kits. Although the existing front panel will have to be negotiated through the rack strips, this could be a very useful option.

RB-FR1

FR1 accessory kit may be fitted to suitable Redbox models, for use in circumstances where the equipment is not rack-mounted and the extra width of the unused rack-mounting ears is undesirable. This replaces the existing front panel of the RB-ADDA, RB-BL4, RB-UL4, RB-LU4. The result of this modification is to remove the rack-mounting ears, reducing the width of the equipment to 418mm. The kits consist of the replacement panel and fitting screws. They may be fitted using only a screwdriver.

RB-FR2, RB-FR3

RB-FR2 fits the RB-HD1 and RB-DAC1. The RB-FR3 fits the RB-HD2. In both cases the panels are printed with the appropriate legend to suit the controls and connectors on the equipment. The result of the modification is to remove the rack-mounting ears and reduce the width of the equipment from 484mm to 258mm.
