WHARTON CLOCKS - Network Versions - Enhanced features – 4000NE Series

The Wharton NE series offers a simple installation clock solution using Network Time Protocol (NTP) Ethernet networking technology and RJ45 style connectors via an existing local area network and ensure access to correct and legally-traceable time information. Wharton 4000NE series clocks can be automatically synchronised via NTP from a local or internet time server with automatic seasonal time changes and programmable time-zone offset. NTP is a time synchronisation protocol for inconsistent latency, packet-switched, computer networks which abides by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) standards.

Additionally the NE series has enhanced features allowing additional synchronisation and hardware control via the use of a number of factory fit interface modules and peripheral control options that connect to the ‘outside world’ via a six way terminal block on the back panel.

Display

The 4000NE series clocks provide a precise and elegant display of time, or time and date, using bright and clear LED characters with both manual and automatic brightness control for energy efficient use. The various display formats offer a variety of character heights and colours. Character heights from 14mm to 220mm suitable for use at viewing distances from 3 to 100 metres. Note that some models limit the choice of available character heights. Character colours available are red, green, yellow, blue and white. Briefly the models/display options for the more popular types of NE series clocks that Canford list are:

4010 hours/minutes/seconds
4200 hours/minutes
4500 day of week/day of month/month/hours/minutes
4580 countdown to event - days/hours/minutes/seconds (days on row 1 of a 2 row display)
4900 hours/minutes/seconds with a circular 60 second LED display marker

Other models are available to special order on a short lead time.

Synchronisation and control

The 4000NE series clocks have a 10/100Base-T Ethernet NTP interface port and can be synchronised with a Wharton 5000 series or other local or remote NTP network time-server across a TCP/IP Ethernet network, see Wharton Clocks - NTP Time Servers - Ethernet - 5000 Series. They can be configured, managed and updated remotely across the Ethernet TCP/IP network using the free Wharton cMon software available to download from this product page, (see the linked resources). Fully automatic configuration is supported when used with a DHCP server with option 42 configured.

The clocks may also be used as stand-alone units operating from their internal high stability quartz crystal oscillator.

Further enhanced features include the ability to configure one 4000NE series clock as a ‘local master’ controlling up to 5 other 4000NE clocks via the back panel interface terminal block. Each slave digital clock is connected in parallel using a 1.5mm sq twisted pair cable. Note that the total cable length should not exceed 200m. Additional control and synchronisation support include w482 time code, 488HS4-GPS (see WHARTON CLOCKS - Time Code Receivers – Satellite), MB serial and MobaLine time codes.

SMPTE/EBU (LTC), IRIG-B/AFNOR timecode, RS232 and RS485 serial ASCII input options are available at the time of order. Canford list some 4000NE models fitted with the SMPTE/EBU (LTC) input option. Other input options available to special order generally on a short lead time.

NOTE: The timecode and ASCII input options cannot be retrospectively fitted, post purchase. NE clocks ordered with the timecode and ASCII input options have all other external hardware interfacing disabled as the card overrides them.

Wharton 4000NE clocks manufactured and in circulation before Jan 2020 may be able to use legacy input module user fit cards that are available whilst manufacturer stocks last, see WHARTON CLOCKS - Non-Network Versions - Enhanced features - 4000E Series for details and installation instructions.

Stopwatch function

The 4000NE clocks may be used as a stopwatch, programmable timer or up/down time counter when controlled with the supplied infrared (IR) handsets or via network messages.

Further enhanced features include the use of the optional 496E wired control panel or user-supplied voltage-free contacts when connected to the back panel interface terminal block.

The 496E external switch unit enables both up and down counting from a pre-programmed start time with a wide range of programmable display freeze and counting modes with an optional relay closure when the count reaches zero.

Note: NE clocks ordered with the timecode and ASCII input options have all other external hardware interfacing disabled as the card overrides them. As a result the stopwatch in this case may only be operated via the clocks included IR remote control as the 496E will not function in this case.

Cases

4000NE clocks listed by Canford are supplied in black cases with options for surface mounting on or flush mounting in a panel. Additional options such as flush mounting with back box for installation into a solid wall, single and double sided ceiling suspended cases, IP65 rated for environmentally difficult applications, different case colours and finishes are available to special order.

Power supply

4000NE models listed are powered from an internal 110-230V AC, 50-60Hz AC supply. A non-rechargeable internal Lithium (Li) battery provides a standby supply to maintain the time-keeping in case of a power supply interruption for approximately 1 year and can be easily replaced. The power lead has a UK plug.

Models with European, US, Australian or unterminated power leads are available to special order. Power over Ethernet (PoE) and 24V DC operation is also available to special order. PoE operation powers the clock over the standard Cat-5 network cable using IEEE 802.3af power injectors. PoE Midspan and Endspan support may be available (needs to be specified when ordering).

Temperature sensor

Alternating or static time/temperature display is possible when used with the optional Wharton 406 temperature sensor. Suitable for internal or external mounting the 406 sensor comes complete with 5m of cable. A clock fitted with the temperature sensor cannot be used as a local master clock or stopwatch controlled via external wired switches.

4500NE Calendar/Date & Time clocks Languages

Calendar clocks can be configured to display the date in up to three languages from a selection of twenty two options. The three selected languages can be displayed sequentially. Language options as standard are: Catallonian, English, Russian, Czech, Hungarian, Swedish, German, Croatian, Finnish, Danish, Italian, Slovakian, Spanish, Norwegian, Slovenian, French, Dutch, Welsh, Faroese, Portuguese, Galician and Polish.

Other languages may be available to special order.
