These dedicated audio cable testers from cable-testing specialists CableJog offer manual and automated testing of cables, fitted with a variety of industry standard connectors, of up to nine conductors. If it is not possible to bring both ends of a cable to a test location, either physically or by using an existing 'good' cable to extend the remote end, the same tests may be carried out by one person, by using an AudioJog unit at each end. Portable and rack-mounted versions are available.
The tester has two sets of connectors. In normal use, one end of the cable is plugged into each set. There are two rows of LED's corresponding to each of the possible connector pins and one for the screen (or ground) connection. In manual mode, the test button is pressed to step through tests on each pin. As each pin is activated, the LED's indicate all connections associated with that pin, so that short circuits, open and crossed circuits can be found. The LED's also show the possibility of high resistance or leakage connections. Once a 'good' cable has been tested, the result can be saved to memory. The automatic method can then be used to test further similar cables. Pressing the test button initiates an automatic sequence of testing, where the tester will stop to indicate each fault found, requiring a press of the button to continue the tests.
When two units are used, one local and one remote, operation is similar. Remote testing relies on continuity of the screen connection. When using a single tester, the threshold between an open and continuous circuit is 255 kohms. When using two testers, this changes to 75kohms.
This version is battery powered and built in an sturdy metal case. One set of connectors are mounted on each side with BNC types on a third side. LEDs and a test switch appear on the top face. An on/off switch is placed between the BNC connectors. It has a test method to find intermittent faults against a status saved to the internal memory.
