Studio Microphones

MD 421 Dynamic, cardioid

Perhaps one of the best known microphones in the world, the classic MD 421 II has 'excellent sound qualities' to cope with the most diverse recording conditions and broadcasting applications, especially used with drums, brass instruments, as an interview or announcer's microphone. A five-position bass control enhances it's 'all-round' qualities. This rugged, professional microphone offers 'effective feedback rejection, clear sound reproduction and easy handling due to pronounced directivity'. It is supplied with an MZA 421 stand adapter, a dedicated design which clips into a recess in the body of the microphone, to mount it on a 3/8 inch threaded stud. The microphone has a black polycarbonate body with steel grille. Suitable accessories include the MZW 421 windshield.

Applications: Bass and brass instruments, drums, handheld interview, announcer. Frequency response: 30-17000Hz. Dimensions: 215 L x 46 x 49 mm. Weight: 385g.

MKH 30 Condenser, figure of eight, MS

The symmetrical transducer design of the MKH 30 produces an 'unusually wide and smooth' frequency response. It is particularly suited to soloists and small instrumental groups and can also serve as an 'S' microphone in MS stereo applications. As a 'spot' microphone it is particularly useful in the effective suppression of sounds from adjacent sound sources. High rejection of lateral sounds, low inherent self-noise and symmetrical transducer technology 'ensures extremely low distortion'. The output is balanced, transformerless and fully- floating. A roll-off filter may be switched in to compensate for proximity effects at a distance of approximately 0.5m for digital recording; there is a switched 10dB pad. The light metal body is anodised black. It is supplied with MZS80 shock mount and a MZW 41 windshield. Suitable accessories include MZD 30 dual clip for M-S stereo, which takes both an MKH30 and another microphone from the MKH range, a common combination.

Applications: Music, MS, nature recordings, film, location. Frequency response: 40-20000Hz. Power: 44-52V DC phantom power required. Dimensions: 174 x 25 (length x maximum diameter) mm. Weight: 110g.

MKH 50 Condenser, super-cardioid, MS

The super-cardioid MKH 50 offers a higher attenuation of diffuse field and lateral sound than the cardioid microphone. It is principally designed for use as a soloist's or spot microphone for applications requiring a high degree of side-borne sound muting and feedback rejection. The directional characteristics are frequency-independent. With 'exceptionally low inherent self-noise', and symmetrical transducer technology ensuring 'extremely low distortion', the MKH50 has a transformerless and fully-floating balanced output. The black, anodised, light metal body has a roll-off filter which may be switched in to compensate for proximity effects at a distance of approximately 0.5m, and a 10dB switched pad. It is supplied with MZS40 shock mount and a MZW 41 windshield. Suitable accessories include MZD 30 dual clip for M-S stereo, which takes both an MKH30 and another microphone from the MKH range, a common combination.

Applications: Music, MS. Frequency response: 40-20000Hz. Power: 44-52V DC phantom power required. Dimensions: 153 x 25 (length x maximum diameter)mm. Weight: 100g.

MKH 8020 RF Condenser, omnidirectional

An omni-directional instrument microphone that has been designed for use as a main mic for “spaced pair” and 'Decca Tree' recordings, or the use in an OSS 'Jecklin Disk' array. As it does not suffer from a proximity effect, it is also a good choice for close-miking. A frequency response of 10Hz to 60kHz makes the MKH 8020 'perfect' for recording pipe organs, grand piano and acoustic double-bass. Dimensions (Diam. x L): 19 x 41mm, excluding XLR module; 19 x 74mm, including XLR module.

MKH 8050 RF Condenser, super-cardioid

MKH 8050 is a super-cardioid microphone that Sennheiser suggest is 'perfect for' recording soloists, large instruments like the grand piano but also orchestras. A balanced frequency response of 30Hz to 50kHz is present within the pick-up pattern, which allows 'absolute acoustical separation' of the instruments miked. The microphone allows a higher attenuation of off-axis sound from the side than the cardioid MKH 8040. Dimensions (Diam. x L): 19 x 41mm, excluding XLR module; 19 x 74mm, including XLR module. Weight: 25g, without XLR module; 55g, with XLR module.

MKH 8090 RF Condenser, cardioid

A wide cardioid microphone that has been designed for use as a main microphone when less acoustic impression of space is demanded. It is also a useful microphone to have to support capturing larger groups of instruments. Sennheiser suggest MKH 8090 has a 'very natural sound'. The microphone has a frequency response of 30Hz to 50kHz. Dimensions (Diam. x L): 19 x 41mm, excluding XLR module; 19 x 75mm, including XLR module. Weight: 25g, without XLR module; 55g, with XLR module.

Included accessories: MZX 8000 XLR module, MZQ 8000 microphone clip, MZW 8000 windshield, user guide, transport case.

Shotgun Microphones

This selection of short and long shotgun microphones are all RF condenser types, including the venerable MKH 416 and the newer MKH 60 and MKH 70 and the , MKH 418-S M-S stereo design. RF condenser microphones are more resistant to damp conditions than conventional electret designs. As a result they are more suitable for use outdoors, as the ubiquity at sporting events of the MKH 416, over several decades, demonstrates.

MKH 416-P48U3 Condenser, super-cardioid shotgun

Evolved from a near-legendary series, the MKH 416-P48U3 is a shotgun, interference-tube microphone. Stereo Microphones

Intended for professional ENG, film, location and broadcasting applications the condenser designs here include an XY stereo design, with both battery and phantom powering for convenient deployment on location and a mid-side model for maximum control of stereo width, useful when capturing dialogue, live music or ambient recordings.

MKH 418-S RF Condenser, M-S stereo

Intended for professional stereo work, this has two capsules, one in an interference tube to give super cardioid response and one with a figure-of eight pick-up pattern, combined together to make a M-S format stereo microphone. The M and S outputs are presented separately for external manipulation as required, either by a suitable MS to AB matrix, or using three channels, with phase switches, of a mixer: This allows control of the balance between the mono information from the M capsule and the spatial information from the side channel. The super cardioid response gives increased directivity for the 'M' signal. The compact dimensions, 'very good consonant clarity and good spatial representation' make it 'ideally suited for every type of application in film, radio, television and reporting, both indoors and outdoors'. Sturdy and 'very weather-resistant' the 418 has 'very low noise, high sensitivity' and a transformer-less balanced output. The matt-black metal casing has a male 5-pin XLR connector. It is supplied in a transport case.

Frequency response: 40-20000Hz. Power: 44-52V DC phantom power required. Dimensions: 280 x 19 (length x maximum diameter) mm. Weight: 220g.
