G20 Media Centre runs on Canford Cable

Canford has supplied the UK systems integrator Feltech, with the fully terminated cable infrastructure for the media centre of the G20 summit held in London. The project was time critical and utilised several Canford cables including one of our specialist High Definition TV designs.

The multicores were made up from several cable types. Canford’s flexible miniature CAT5E (CAT5E-F-M) was supplied with custom marking on the sleeves for ease of interconnection. Two variations of the Canford miniature 4.7mm Starquad (SQ4.7) were also employed. The HD video signals are carried by Canford SDV-L, a low loss true 75 ohm serial digital cable for HD TV intended for use over longer transmission distances. The outer jacket for the completed multicores was also custom printed to Feltech’s requirements to include their web address and before shipping each of the multicores was terminated and tested to HD TV standards by our wiremen.

For ease of deployment and re-deployment we engineered a coiling twist into each of the multicores. The twist on the ‘layup’ is periodically reversed to avoid kinks and making the reel that much more manageable. 11 km of the completed multicores were reeled and assembled into 217 cables.

Feltech were only able to provide us with 4 weeks notice of the project. Despite this we were able to meet the very tight deadlines thanks to our close working relationship with Draka cables going back over 20 years. Draka manufactured the individual cores at various European sites with final ‘layup’ being completed at their Washington Tyne & Wear plant.

Canford technical documents outlining maximum transmission distances for digital video cables and also one on characteristics required for high performance digital video cables can be found at www.canford.co.uk/TechZone/.
