Fresh from IBC 2018 and having survived a rather choppy North Sea ferry crossing travelling back home to Newcastle in the wake of storm Ali, we thought we’d review what was, once again, a very successful IBC outing.
This year, following significant product development, we launched two exciting new ranges. An entirely new 12G 4K video patching solution and a series of IP mains distribution units which offer an array of power measurement and control features through a secure HTTPS network connection.
The 12G 4K microMUSA range of patch panels, U-links and patchcords uses a wholly new micro video patching connector, designed by Coax Connectors Ltd for Canford, in conjunction with panels from Canford’s own manufacturing unit. microMUSA will be particularly useful in Outside Broadcast trucks due to the reduced weight, space saving design and 12G performance.
Exclusively available from Canford, the microMUSA is based on the proven 3G MUSA which Canford has manufactured for almost 20 years. microMUSA patch panels are available in 2x32 and 2x48 high-density 1U formats. Our 32U microMUSA panel has standard BNC connectors at the rear, whereas the 48-way makes use of micro BNC connectors which are 51% smaller than standard BNC’s.
Performance exceeds the requirements of SMPTE ST 2082-1 making the microMUSA suitable for composite and component video, 270 Mb/s SDI, uncompressed 1080i or 1080p HD-SDI video and 4K UHD (2160P60) video up to 12GHz.
The jacks are mounted in vibration resistant plastic blocks, which are mounted in a rigid aluminium extrusion. Snap-on designation strips are provided. The construction is similar to the full size MUSA design – just smaller.
U-links have a cast metal body which incorporates finger grips, with a colour coding insert, again like the full size MUSA. Patchcords are available in a range of colours. A detent feature in the connectors ensures precise mating, to get full 12G performance at all times.
There was also considerable interest in our latest mains distribution product development. Canford manufactures over 290 different mains distribution unit (MDU) variants, so many that we developed a helpful MDU selection tool. Our latest IP MDU development is however, without doubt, the most advanced design to date. Using our unparalleled experience, our design engineers have built an IP addressable MDU which is suitable for smart building designs of today and into the future.
The team have completely re-designed our legacy circuitry and implemented a multitude of features for managing and monitoring power distribution. A number of models will be offered, sharing incremental features leading up to fully loaded, range topping model. The range includes dual input types with auto changeover.
All models will be housed in a familiar 1U Canford chassis with snap-on designation strip. Input will be via Powercon and each MDU will provide x12 individually fused IEC outputs with LED status indicators. Network connection is via RJ45 with web browser access being via secure HTTPS connection.
Our new products are now in final stages of development as we respond to customer feedback at IBC 2018. Both the microMUSA and IP MDU are officially “Coming Soon” and we expect that means they will be available during December 2018.
